The Barney Craig project
Barney Craig used to be the largest mineshop in the region. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was at risk of collapsing beyond repair. With funding from Historic England, Heritage Lottery Fund and Northumberland County Council, the North Pennines AONB Partnership will stabilise and protect Barney Craig so that it will survive many more winters. Experts from Heritage Consolidation will re-roof the building, repair the walls and add new windows and doors, using traditional methods and existing materials where available. The upper floors will be converted into a simple Camping Barn to be owned and managed by Allen Valleys Enterprise Limited, for the benefit of the local community.
